Savannah History

Established in 1733, Savannah is the oldest city in the state of Georgia. Orignally, Savannah was the British capitol of the Province of Georgia before coming the first capitol of the U.S. state of Georgia. Each year Savannah attracts millions of visitors. The combination of the historic homes, buildings, cobblestone streets and parks make Savannah a perfect vacation spot for the family and history buff.

Points of Interest

Formally known as “Hostess City of the South”, Savannah’s history and southern charm is known throughout the world. Savannah used to be called “the Forest City” because of large oak trees in the area that were used for shipbuilding in the 19th century. Savannah’s downtown is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States. In 2014 Savannah reported over 13.5 million visitors.

Savannah’s location offers easy access to many location attractions. Tybee Island, formerly known as “Savannah Beach”, is the location of the famous “Tybee Island Light Station”, the first lighthouse on the southern Atlantic coast. Also near Savannah you will find the village of Thunderbolt, a shrimping village, and other resorts areas such as Beaulieu, Vernonburg, Savannahians and the Isle of Hope.

Forsyth Park

Created in the 1840s, Forsyth park sits on 30 acres in Savannah. The park is home of a massive fountain on the north end reminiscent of fountains in the Place de la Concorde in Paris and in Cuzco, Peru. In the middle of the park, you will find a historic confederate memorial commemorating those who gave their lives fighting for the Confederacy in the civil war.
